The first, and most essential thing to do on my tele, was to change the pickups. I decided to try the Dimarzio Twang kings on both neck and bridge. They are pretty cheap, and I have read a lot of good things about them.
As I opened the guitar, I noticed that it wasn't shielded, so the very first thing I had to do was to buy some copper adhesive and shield it. I haven't done this before, but it wasn't very hard to do. The only thing that was a little tricky was that I had to drill a larger hole between the bridge and pots "chambers". The cords of the new pickups were a lot thicker than the stock pickups, and I also had to fit the grounding cords for the shielding in the same hole.
Then to the pickups. The twang kings fitted well in the very same holes as before, so it was not very hard to replace them. The bridge pickup had a baseplate that I also grounded to the volume pot.
Then I put some shielding on the back of the pickguard. I am going to change this pickguard for a white pearl soon, so I just glued on some aluminium foil for now.
And finally I fired her up. And she sang beautifully. Especially the neck pickup has a great twanging sound. I am not so sure about the bridge pickup though. I think a less trebly pickup would have been better, but I lowered the treble side quite a lot so it sounded ok. I will probably look for another one at a later point. But over all, I am pretty happy. The hum is also significantly lower.
